Discover Bahía de las Águilas in the Dominican Republic

Discover Bahía de las Águilas in the Dominican Republic

Bahía de las Águilas, in the Dominican Republic, is an exclusive area of our country. This part of the Caribbean Sea is very close to Santo Domingo and hides some of the best landscapes of our country.

Where Bahía de las Águilas is located

Bahía de las Águilas is located in the southwest tip of the Dominican Republic, in the province of Pedernales. It is in the southernmost part of Jaragua National Park, near the border with Haiti. It is a pristine and secluded beach known for its natural beauty and marine and terrestrial biodiversity.

Bahía de las Águilas, a unique and unforgettable landscape

Bahía de las Águilas is one of the most impressive natural treasures of the Dominican Republic, known for its spectacular beauty and great ecological importance. Located in Jaragua National Park in the province of Pedernales, it stretches for about 8 kilometers of coastline and is one of the last virgin beaches in the Caribbean.

One of the most notable features of Bahía de las Águilas is the stunning clarity of the water, a crystal-clear turquoise blue that provides ideal conditions for snorkeling and observing marine life. The beach is bordered by low limestone cliffs and its sand is fine and white, which contributes to its appeal.

What really distinguishes Bahía de las Águilas is its pristine natural environment. The area around the beach is a protected national park, which means it is free from commercial and residential development. This protection also allows for the conservation of local biodiversity, including numerous species of birds and sea turtles that nest on the beach. In addition, the mangroves and coral reefs near the bay harbor a rich variety of marine life.

Despite its isolation, or perhaps because of it, Bahía de las Águilas is a true paradise for those seeking an escape from civilization and a connection to nature in its purest state. It is a place of unmatched tranquility, unspoiled natural beauty, and a sanctuary for wildlife.

How to get to Bahía de las Águilas

Getting to Bahía de las Águilas from Santo Domingo or Punta Cana can be an adventure due to the location of this coast. This is a general guide on how to get there from Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, but it is always advisable to consult with local tourism services for updated and accurate information.

 From Santo Domingo

The fastest route generally involves driving. You should take the 6 de Noviembre Highway towards San Cristóbal and then continue on the Sánchez Road (Route 2) west to Barahona. From there, follow the coastal road south until you reach Pedernales. The journey takes about five hours by car.

From Pedernales, you can hire a boat or take a tour to reach Bahía de las Águilas, as the last part of the journey must be made by sea or through a rugged path in a 4x4 vehicle.

 From Punta Cana

Due to the distance, the most advisable option is to fly to Santo Domingo and then follow the previous route. However, if you choose to drive, you would have to take the Coral Highway and the 6 de Noviembre Highway towards San Cristóbal, and then follow the Sánchez Road to Barahona, following the same route as from Santo Domingo. The drive from Punta Cana to Pedernales could take about 7 to 8 hours.

In both cases, due to the distance of the trip and the remote location of Bahía de las Águilas, many visitors choose to spend the night in Pedernales. Again, we remind you that it is best to consult a local tourism service for more accurate and updated information.
