Miches, the New Golden Coast of the Dominican Republic

It is unlikely that you have heard of Michès, the new Golden Coast of the Dominican Republic.

This rising small town in the province of El Seibo on the northeastern coast is nestled between the slopes of the Cordillera Oriental mountains and the waters of Samaná Bay.

Described as a "hidden gem," it boasts pristine sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dense rainforests, inviting comparisons with Australia's renowned Gold Coast.

What has recently brought Michès into the spotlight is the summer reopening of the five-star resort, Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, which had been nearly closed for months since its inauguration in January 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michès is home to about 30,000 residents, primarily farmers and fishermen, yet a growing number of vacationers might join them in the coming years, seeking the Dominican Republic's mini 'Golden Coast.'

The untouched city is located approximately 90 minutes by car from Punta Cana and the beachfront, golf, and seaside developments of the leading developer, Noval Properties.

Michès offers numerous opportunities to enjoy water activities like swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boating. From December to March, whale watching is available in Samaná Bay.

Or simply lounge and unwind on the expansive sandy beaches, basking in the sun.

When you seek a more energetic excursion, consider visiting Michès' Salto de la Jalda, the Caribbean's tallest waterfall at 120 meters, located about a 40-minute drive from Michès. You can hire guides to assist you in navigating the moderately challenging trails, which can take three to four hours to traverse, ride horseback, or you might splash out, taking a helicopter to land nearby.

On the return journey to Punta Cana, take in Montaña Redonda and its breathtaking views. Park nearby and take a truck up to the top, though be mindful that the narrow roads are not for the faint-hearted! You'll be rewarded with an array of swings that make you feel like you are soaring over the mountain's edge.
