Miches – the Dominican Republic’s new Gold Coast

It’s unlikely that you have heard of Michès – the Dominican Republic’s new Gold Coast.

The up-and-coming small town in the El Seibo province on the northeast coast lies between the slopes of the Cordillera Oriental mountains and the waters of Samaná Bay.

It is described as a ‘hidden gem” boasting untouched sandy beaches, clear waters and dense rain forests, encouraging comparisons with Australia’s popular Gold Coast.

But what has brought Michès to prominence recently is the summer reopening of the five-star resort, the Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, which had been closed all but a few months from its January 2020 launch due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michès has a population of around 30,000, consisting mainly of farmers and fishermen, but they could well be joined by a growing number of vacationers in the coming years seeking the Dominican Republic’s mini ‘Gold Coast’.

The unspoiled town is around a 90-minute drive from Punta Cana, and the luxury beach, golf and waterside resorts of top developer

There are plenty of opportunities at Michès to enjoy watersports including swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding and boating.  From December to March, you can go whale watching in Samaná Bay.

Or just lie back and relax on the spacious sandy beaches, soaking up the sun.

When you want a trip that requires more energy, consider seeing Michès is Salto de la Jalda, the highest waterfall of the Caribbean at 120 metres tall, which is around a 40-minute drive from Michès. You can hire guides to help you navigate the moderately difficult trails, which can take three or four hours to navigate, ride horses or you can splash out, take a helicopter and land close by.

On the way back to Punta Cana, take in Montaña Redonda and its amazing views. Park nearby and take a truck to the top – although beware that the narrow roads are not for the faint-hearted! You will be rewarded with a choice of swings that make you feel like you are flying over the edge of the mountain.
