Visiting the Museum of Modern Art of Santo Domingo

The Museum of Modern Art of Santo Domingo is a cultural space of reference in our capital. In this museum you can get to know the current cultural expressions of the Dominican Republic, as well as works by the main artists of the countries that form part of the Caribbean culture.

The origin of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Santo Domingo

The Museum of Modern Art of Santo Domingo, located in the capital of the Dominican Republic, was inaugurated on December 3, 1976. This museum is a key institution in the promotion and preservation of contemporary art in the Caribbean and Latin America. Its creation was part of the National Culture Plan promoted by the Dominican government, with the aim of promoting culture and the arts in the country.

The building that houses the museum, designed by architect José Antonio Caro Álvarez, is a remarkable example of modern Dominican architecture. Since its opening, the museum has assembled an impressive collection of works by Dominican and international artists, spanning diverse disciplines such as painting, sculpture, photography and multimedia art.

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Santo Domingo serves not only as an exhibition space, but also as a centre for education and research, promoting contemporary art and its appreciation in the region.
