What to do in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Puerto Plata is a coastal city in the northern region of the Dominican Republic. It is situated very near Santiago de los Caballeros and the Samaná Peninsula. The northern part of the country offers a wide array of natural and historical sites, along with breathtaking beaches. Let's explore this city, with everything to do in Puerto Plata and its main tourist destinations.

Central Park

Central Park is one of the most popular social spaces in Puerto Plata. Also known as Independence Square, it is located in the city center and hosts the Puerto Plata Town Hall, a church, the Commercial Club, and other iconic buildings from different eras.

Puerto Plata Cable Car

When considering what to see in Puerto Plata, the cable car is a must-visit. The views are breathtaking; from the highest point of the cable car, you can see the entire city, including Isabel de Torres Hill and the botanical gardens, plus the Christ the Redeemer statue that watches over the city from above.

Fortaleza de San Felipe

The Dominican Republic houses many colonial-era buildings, and one of the most impressive that remains is in Puerto Plata: Fortaleza de San Felipe.

This fortification was constructed in the 16th century, still retaining its intact wall and moat. Inside, you can visit a museum, and it is located very near the 24-meter Puerto Plata Lighthouse.

La Isabela Settlement

History marks La Isabela as the first European settlement in the history of the Americas. Although this village only retains the outline of those initial constructions, it is of crucial importance to our history. Its construction took place in 1493, only a few months after the first Spanish expedition arrived.

Currently, the positions of five main structures can be distinguished: Christopher Columbus's house, the grain warehouse, the powder magazine, the church, and the watchtower.

Cayo Arena

Speaking of things to do in Puerto Plata, we cannot forget its beaches and coastal area. Many tourists visit the Dominican Republic in search of exclusive and secluded beaches; Cayo Arena is undoubtedly one of the best options to enjoy a completely natural and private space.

Also known as Cayo Paraíso, it is a sandbar surrounded by turquoise waters, tropical fish, and a stunning coral reef.

Brugal Plant

Puerto Plata is home to the headquarters of Brugal, where this world-renowned rum is bottled and aged. Brugal's doors are open to visitors who wish to learn more about the rum-making process and discover the history of this iconic Dominican rum brand.

Enjoy the Ocean on a Catamaran

Atlantic waters bathe the coasts of Puerto Plata. You can venture into the ocean aboard a catamaran, from which you can enjoy underwater activities and explore the marine life hidden along the Puerto Plata coastline.

Enjoy Golf

Puerto Plata is one of the premier destinations in the Dominican Republic for golf enthusiasts. The city's coast boasts some of the country's finest golf courses, including the Playa Dorada Golf Course and Los Mangos Golf Course, both offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic.

Damajagua Waterfalls

If you're searching for what to see in Puerto Plata and you have a passion for nature, the 27 Damajagua Waterfalls are a must-see: a natural sanctuary inland that includes springs, mangroves, and a trail of 27 natural pools and waterfalls along the Demajagua River.

Laguna Gri-Gri

Puerto Plata is a city surrounded by various natural spaces, including Laguna Gri-Gri.

This lagoon is fed by several springs in areas near the city and is one of the major bird sanctuaries in the country. Dozens of different species coexist in this environment. One of the activities you can enjoy at Laguna Gri-Gri is a boat ride, where you can witness the sunset in a striking setting.

Kitesurfing

Finally, for the more adventurous, there is the opportunity to enjoy kitesurfing in the open Atlantic. Cabarete Beach, about 35 kilometers from Puerto Plata, offers the perfect spot for engaging in kitesurfing in waters ideal for this sport.
