It is advisable to check road conditions and weather before making your trip, as the park may be inaccessible during the rainy season.

What to See in Los Haitises National Park

Los Haitises National Park is one of the Dominican Republic's most astonishing places, brimming with natural and historical attractions. These are the must-see areas during your visit.

  • Mogotes: One of the park's most notable features is the mogotes, limestone hills that can reach heights of up to 40 meters. These geological formations provide an awe-inspiring landscape and are home to a variety of endemic birds and plants.

  • Mangroves: Los Haitises boasts an extensive network of mangroves that play a crucial role in the park's ecosystem, offering habitat to numerous species and protecting the shoreline from erosion. You can traverse the mangroves by canoe or boat, with chances to spot birds like pelicans, herons, and cormorants.

  • Caves: The park hosts several caves once used by the indigenous Tainos. In Cueva de la Línea and Cueva de San Gabriel, you can observe pictographs and petroglyphs that predate the arrival of European settlers. Cueva de la Arena, on an island off the coast, is renowned for its significant bat colony.

  • San Lorenzo Bay: This bay, located at the park’s eastern edge, is one of Los Haitises' most picturesque spots. Encircled by mangroves and mogotes, it is an excellent location for bird watching and enjoying the landscape.

  • Bird Island: This small island is famed as a bird sanctuary. Here you can find species like the brown pelican and the white heron. Be sure to bring binoculars to fully appreciate these birds in their grandeur.

  • Subtropical Humid Forest: Los Haitises is home to a diverse subtropical humid forest. While walking the park's trails, you'll encounter a wide variety of endemic plants, including numerous orchid and fern species.

  • Valle del Rey Area: This terrestrial zone within the park encompasses caves and springs. It is an excellent venue for hiking and exploration.
